Altria Q3 2026: a beat, a raised outlook, and the volume question
Altria (MO) reported third-quarter adjusted EPS of $1.52 before the open on Oct 29, a penny above the $1.51 consensus and up 4.8% from a year ago. Revenue beat by more, and management raised the bottom of its 2026 guidance. After a two-cent miss in Q2, this quarter puts Altria back on the beat side.
Bottom line
- Clean beat on both lines. Adjusted EPS beat by $0.01; revenue net of excise taxes beat by about $130 million (+2.5%) and grew 3.6% year over year.
- Guidance up. The 2026 range moved to $5.66–$5.74 (4.5%–6.0% growth over 2025's $5.42). The midpoint rose from about $5.67 to $5.70.
- Pricing still beats volume. Domestic cigarette shipments fell 2.9% (about 4% adjusted for inventory), yet smokeable operating income rose 3.9%.
- More cash back to holders. A $1 billion expansion of the buyback, now running through 2027, on top of a dividend raised 4.7% in August.
- The soft spot is oral tobacco. on! pouches grew 13.3%, but Copenhagen and Skoal fell double digits and on! lost share of the pouch category.

How Altria grows while smoking shrinks
The core of the story has not changed in a decade: fewer cigarettes, higher prices, wider margins. This quarter fit the pattern.
Inside the cigarette numbers there was a notable mix shift. Marlboro shipments fell 6.4% to 13.32 billion sticks, and Marlboro's retail share slipped a full point to 39.5%. Altria's own discount-brand shipments jumped 40.5% to 1.70 billion. Even so, smokeable revenue net of excise taxes rose 3.7% to $4.76 billion, operating income rose 3.9% to $3.07 billion, and the margin edged up to 64.5%.
Black & Mild cigars were steady, with shipments up 0.9% to 456 million.
Oral tobacco: on! grows, the old brands fade
| Measure | Q3 2026 | Change y/y |
|---|---|---|
| Total oral shipments | 170.6M cans | −4.3% (about −5% adjusted) |
| on! shipments | 47.8M cans | +13.3% |
| Copenhagen shipments | — | −10.1% |
| Skoal shipments | — | −12.6% |
| on! share of nicotine-pouch category | 13.5% | −1.3 pts |
| Oral operating income | $443M | −3.7% (margin 66.4%, −2.8 pts) |
on! is growing, but the pouch category is growing faster, so on! is losing share to competitors. Altria expanded on! PLUS 12 mg nationally and added flavors this quarter. Meanwhile, Altria still does not expect its NJOY ACE e-vapor device back on the U.S. market in 2026, so e-vapor adds little to results for now.
Cash returns: the income case
- Dividend: raised 4.7% in August to an annualized $4.44 a share, Altria's 61st increase in 57 years. That is about a 6.1% yield at the Oct 28 close of $72.99.
- Buybacks: 5.9 million shares for $400 million in Q3 (average $68.52), and $735 million so far in 2026. The board added $1 billion to the program, which now runs through Dec. 31, 2027.
- Balance sheet: total debt fell to $24.06 billion from $25.71 billion at the end of 2025; cash fell to $2.70 billion from $4.47 billion.
At $72.99, the stock trades at about 12.8 times the new guidance midpoint of $5.70. It is up about 27% this year and sits below its 52-week high of $77.06.
Bull case, bear case, what to watch
Bull case
- Pricing power keeps converting falling volumes into rising profit, quarter after quarter.
- A raised outlook, a growing dividend and a bigger buyback point to management confidence.
- About 12.8x earnings with a ~6% yield is inexpensive next to the broader market.
Bear case
- Cigarette volume declines of about 4% a year compound, and Marlboro is losing share to discount brands, including Altria's own.
- Oral tobacco profit is shrinking, and on! is losing ground in the fastest-growing category.
- E-vapor remains on hold, and regulation (menthol, nicotine limits, flavor rules) is a standing risk.
What to watch
- Marlboro retail share and the premium-to-discount mix
- on! share of the pouch category
- Any update on NJOY ACE's return
- Q4 results in late January and the 2027 outlook
